Spare Dragon sails

Sunday morning weather forecast: massive rainfall all day long.

So what to do?
I decided to create some Dragon rules sail templates out of MDF.
After finishing sooner than expected, I went on with the sails themselves.
Just to have some spare in stock.
Indeed the fact that only one paneled sails are allowed did help me a lot.
Normally sail making is not my specialty.
And after four hours cutting / taping the A-B-C sets were finished.
Not bad for the first time.

A rig DragonForce B-C rig DragonForce RG65

Next saturday the first sparring test together with Tjakko (NED-81 – UK rigged Dragon) is planned.

A little about the cost of the DragonForce RG65

After having the Dragon almost up to race level, I was wandering how much money went into this project.

A little list:

  • DragonForce complete ready to sail box: € 199,-
  • 2 x Rig Kit: € 66,-
  • A-B-C Sails: € 120,- (or 40,- if you make them yourselves)
  • Upgraded rudder servo: € 27,-
  • Dacron Sail repair patch (2 roles) for multiple deck / sail patches: € 17,-
  • Upgraded metal rudder arm: € 6,-
  • Option: Hard Plastic carry case that fit’s all for safe transportation: € 65,-

I didn’t count my own radio gear, but to be complete: 2.4GHz receiver R617FS: € 56,-

So all top race ready with all options for € 556,-

You can’t even find a standard RG65 kit with one sail for this kind of money!!
A little comparing to the same kit for the top race micromagic: € 580,-

OK, to be complete: a new IOM set you back around € 3500,- and a new K-Class will cost you € 1895,-

Aha moment…….

The test of the day was one at our Micromagic EC-training stage at “Aalsmeer”.

A lot of people wanted to see the Dragon ‘live’.
As an extra I fitted a small video cam at the top of the mast for some on-board experiences.

Well I’ve to say the footage was very interesting and gave me a good reason to change the RG65 mast:

Don’t use a 6mm Skyshark 2P on a RG65!!!! This ends up way to feeble. See for yourself.
Lucky that the Restricted Rules for the DragonForce is bound to the standard 7mm carbon mast 😉

And that was the reason why my Dragon was a ‘slow’ as the Micro’s………..

First test own design sails

Finally I got the chance to test my own design RG65 sails.

So again together with the Micromagics on the water.

It was direct clear that these sails are much better than the “out-of-the-box” set.

Now I’ve to wait for a test against other Dragons or even standard RG65’s.
